Call to Action

Service-learning is an academic course where a service project or service experience is part of the overall grade. In the spirit of learning-by-doing, 起点传媒 faculty, staff and students actively support and engage in service-learning activities that build meaningful and sustainable community partnerships.

What is service-learning?

  • Service-learning is a pedagogy that provides students with structured opportunities to learn, develop and reflect through active participation and thoughtfully organized community involvement.
  • It enhances the academic experience of students by relating academic content and course objectives to issues in the community.
  • Service-learning integrates assessment and student reflection on the interrelationships between course content and community-based learning activities.
  • Conducted in the community, it meets the needs of the students, faculty and community partners and fosters civic competence and engagement. 

How do faculty benefit from service-learning?

  • Integrates teaching and research to generate scholarship on teaching (teacher-scholar).
  • Creates an environment to engage and motivate students.
  • Promotes demonstrated knowledge of academic material and applications.
  • Fosters faculty awareness and community involvement.

Service-Learning/CEL Faculty Fellows Program

Applications for the 2027-2028 Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program will open in the spring semester. This training and implementation program is designed to assist faculty with integrating service-learning into a new course or integrate service-learning into a course that has not previously received S-designation. 2026-2027 Service-Learning/CEL Faculty Fellows

Md Iftekhar Alam

Dr. Md. Iftekhar Alam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at 起点传媒. He earned his Ph.D. in Geology with a focus on Geophysics from Oklahoma State University, an M.S. in Geology from Auburn University, and an M.S. in Petroleum Geology and Geophysics and B.S. in Geology from the University of Dhaka. His teaching and research focus on near-surface geophysics and its applications to environmental, engineering, and natural-hazard challenges. He is passionate about experiential, field-based, and community-engaged learning that connects classroom knowledge with real-world problems. Through the Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program, Dr. Alam aims to develop meaningful community partnerships that provide students with hands-on geoscience experiences while contributing to environmental stewardship, hazard resilience, and community needs.

Laura Epperson

Laura Epperson is a teaching artist, performer, and community collaborator with over fifteen years of experience working in schools and communities in the U.S. and internationally. She uses storytelling, embodiment, play, and inquiry to create community-engaged projects and performances that imagine vibrant futures and abundant possibilities. In her practice-based research, Laura explores how aesthetic approaches support healing, cultivate belonging, and shape change. Laura is an Assistant Professor in the Theatre and New Dance Department at 起点传媒.

Sooyun Im

Sooyun Im is a Professor of Visual Communication Design at 起点传媒. Grounded in design research and critical thinking, her teaching helps students develop adaptive problem-solving skills and communicate clearly across audiences, linking classroom work to community needs and professional practice.

Farbod Khoshnoud

Farbod Khoshnoud, PhD, PGCE, CEng, M.IMechE, M.ASME, Fellow HEA, is an Associate Professor of electromechanical engineering at 起点传媒 and a visiting associate in the Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies in the Aerospace Engineering Department at California Institute of Technology. His current research areas include Self-powered Dynamic Systems, Biologically Inspired Dynamic Systems, and Quantum Robotics, Multibody Dynamics, Controls, Robotics and Autonomy (including applications of quantum entanglement and cryptography for control of dynamical systems and autonomy). Dr. Khoshnoud has also served as a research affiliate at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and has over six years of industry experience.

Daisy Tang

Dr. Daisy Tang is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at 起点传媒 and the founder of the Intelligent Robotics Lab (IRLab). Her research interests include multi-robot systems, human-robot interaction and cooperation, unmanned systems, machine learning, and educational robotics. She teaches a range of core and advanced computer science courses, including data structures, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and robotics. She also mentors and supervises numerous student research and project activities.

CSU-CEL New Taxonomy

The Chancellor's Office Center for Community Engagement (COCCE) is aligning an understanding of community engagement across the system. The COCCE uses community-engaged learning (CEL)* as the umbrella term to identify a broad array of courses in which community engagement is embedded. This definition is the foundation for a larger data collection effort around these student learning experiences.

The CEL Tool allows the CSU to capture meaningful data across the system to better support faculty and work towards appropriate recognition for this work. It also offers insight into curriculum design that may help shape and improve student learning.
