Academic Senate

Service Opportunities

The Academic Senate is recruiting one (1) faculty representative for the Academic Council on International Programs (ACIP).

Full time tenured faculty, tenured track faculty, full-time lecturers who are concerned and knowledgeable about international education efforts are eligible. The term is three years (ends 2029). The appointment began in July 2026 and is for three years.

The ACIP holds two two-day meetings a year. Members of the ACIP serve in a dual capacity as the primary representative of the International Programs on campus and as representatives of the campus as an advisory group in forming policy for International Programs. Campus representatives play a key role in promoting International Programs on campuses, advising resident director applicants, and in directing the campus student selection effort. The standing committees of the ACIP require substantial time commitments from representatives in activities that include the selection of resident directors, academic program review and student selection. Following long-standing practice, the Office of International Programs will pay travel expenses for one meeting, and the campus (department of representative) is responsible for the other.

The Academic Senate Office has an ACIP Handbook(PDF) on file. The handbook gives detailed information about the ACIP and the representative’s responsibilities.

Full time tenured faculty, tenured track faculty, full-time lecturers with an annual contract, and FERP faculty with a 0.5 base for two semesters are eligible to serve. As the end of the academic year approaches, the General Education (GE) Committee will be undertaking the substantial work of GE recertification over the summer. To ensure continuity of college representation and to allow sufficient time for onboarding, the Academic Senate is respectfully requesting a call for nominations and make appointments to fill four summer vacancies on the GE Committee before the end of the semester.
Timely appointments are important so that new members may participate in scheduled May meetings and begin review work as planned.
The committee currently includes representation from multiple colleges, including:
  • Mario Guerrero, Chair (CLASS)
  • Aaron DeRosa (ADM)
  • Li Ge(Collins)
  • Kenneth Lamb(EGR)
  • Denis Iurchenko(Business)
  • Kristi Prins(CLASS)
  • Beverly Quon(EGR)
  • Rachel Van(CLASS)
  • Hilary Hakkenson(CEIS)
At present, the summer committee lacks representation from Science, Agriculture, Environmental Design, and Library/Related Areas, and nominations from these disciplines are especially encouraged.
Committee Responsibilities and Time Commitment
The scope of the committee’s charge this summer includes reviewing all recertification proposals for existing GE courses and determining whether courses will be recertified into GE or returned to departments with feedback in August.
  • Anticipated one to two synchronous meetings in May to establish expectations and assign subcommittees
  • Primarily asynchronous review work over the summer
  • One to two follow‑up synchronous meetings in late July to identify courses requiring additional discussion
  • Each member will collaboratively review approximately 50–60 courses
Given the scope and intensity of this work, summer stipend will be granted per member.
We appreciate your assistance in helping the GE Committee remain fully staffed and broadly representative during this critical recertification cycle.
