The Quantitative Economics MS program is designed so that those starting the program in Fall 2027 or after may earn the MS in three semesters. This requires that they complete three courses each of two semesters, and four courses in the third. The program is designed so most students should start in Fall; though one who has successfully completed intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, and econometrics prior to admission may find it convenient to start in Spring. 

All required courses are offered in the evenings, starting at 5:30 PM. The class size is small (usually 5-15 students) and is in a seminar style.  

An applicant for admission to this program must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and satisfy university and departmental requirements for admission to graduate study. Most applicants will have earned a bachelor's degree in economics or closely related field (e.g., business) but applicants with degrees in other fields may Æðµã´«Ã½. Ideally the applicant will have completed principles of economics (both micro and macro), introductory statistics, and math (e.g., calculus) prior to starting the program. The CSU requires the applicant maintains a GPA of at least 2.5 in coursework completed in the last two years of their undergraduate study. 

Starting in Fall 2026, the department has initiated a blended, 4+1 program allowing students completing their BS in economics at Æðµã´«Ã½ to complete their MS in one additional year. Undergraduates who select this option before completing their BS may earn both a BS and MS with a total of 138 units. Students may select the blended program within any of the three undergraduate options.  18 units of graduate coursework may be completed during their last two semesters. A student who has selected the blended BS/MS option may elect to change their option back to the BS if their plans change. 

Students selecting the blended program in AY 2026/27 who have completed EC 4401, 4403, 4406 and 4444 prior to Fall 2027, may satisfy requirements for both degrees by completing EC 5550, 5552 and 6692 in Fall 2027, and EC 5551, 5553, and 6693 in Spring 2028.
